A Cape Town all-day breakfast café with a secret

It believes everything, from flapjacks to burgers, is better with butter

Everything’s made with butter at this all-day breakfast and bistro bar that opened its doors in the heart of the Mother City mid-2021. It’s a bright hangout where locals, from students to office workers, go to recharge. There are plenty of food and drinks options, and they all bring one thing to the table: a taste of comfort food.

GET BREKKIE, ALL DAY

For under R50 each, you can get any one of these: a slice of homemade sourdough with an abundance of butter, a thick slice of nutty banana bread, a scone with berry jam, two buttered mielies, buttered popcorn, or The Old Boy (a soft-boiled egg with dippy sourdough soldiers). Or take brekkie to the next level and opt for Burnt Butter Ravioli, Trout On Toast, the Butter Benedict or Butter Burger, made with a buttery beef patty, crispy bacon, and sriracha mayo, served with fries, sweet potato crisps, or salad.

You could also stop by for lunch for the Butter Burger, Crave Burger or even a risotto. Image: Mark Schultz

ENJOY DRINKS WITH A TWIST

Why not be daring and order a Mimosa, Prosecco, Classic G&T or the delicious Butter White Russian (oat milk, kahlua, vodka, and espresso). Or opt for Vietnamese Iced Coffee, Matcha Latte, Beet Latte, Ginger Tea, or organic Kombucha Rooibos – there are plenty of good options. Plus, there’s a weekly wine selection.

FEEL THE VIBE OF THE CITY

Butter, in Loop Street, is a popular hangout. It’s easy to identify by the groups of friends, co-workers and couples sitting around tables on the sidewalk. Inside, you’re welcomed by writing on the floor: “We’re butter together”. Yellow walls (one with a drawing of a duck floating in “butter lake”), trendy lights hanging from the ceiling, lush green plants, and a large fan at the back, makes the space feel cool and fresh. Plus, you can escape the office for the day and work from there; it offers free wifi to customers.
